How to Play the Text Adventure Hidden in Google's Homepage
Who knows how long this easter egg has been hidden here.
It's Monday morning so what better to do than to
waste some of your time on a video game? Lucky for you a Redditor has
stumbled across an amusing little text adventure that's baked into the
background code of Google's iconic homepage.
Discovered by Redditor attempt_number_1 and surfaced by Rock Paper Shotgun,
the previously unknown Easter egg is buried pretty deep into
Google.com, so who knows how long it has been waiting undiscovered. To
pull it up using Google Chrome, go to Google.com and search "text
adventure." Then right click the page and select "inspect," or use the
shortcut Ctrl + Shift + I on Windows, or ⌘ + Shift + I on Mac, and then
click the "console" tab on the new window that pops up.
The game you'll find here is amusing, if a little
saccharine and rudimentary; it doesn't even support two-word commands
like other classics of the genre. Of course the appeal is more that this
exists at all as opposed to it being a classic in its own right.
And if what you're really looking for is a classic in its own right, there's good news: You can play Zork on the web and it looks almost as much like work as a web browser does.
